Jan Fries joined the staff of the Council as economist for labor markets in May 2016. He worked in the Research Department of Labor Markets, Human Resources and Social Policy at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and as a lecturer at the University of Applied Labour Studies (HdBA). In 2014, he received his doctoral degree from the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg with his thesis on the labor market effects of wage subsidies, trade liberalisation and personnel measures for older employees. He studied economics at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg and the Free University of Berlin and worked as a research assistant at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) and the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA).
