Cabinet proposes appointment of Ulrike M. Malmendier and Martin Werding

Wiesbaden, 10.08.2022 – The German Cabinet has decided today to propose to the Federal President the appointment of Prof. Dr. Dr. Ulrike M. Malmendier and Prof. Dr. Martin Werding as new members of the German Council of Economic Experts.

Ulrike M. Malmendier is Edward J. and Mollie Arnold Professor of Finance at the Haas School of Business and Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics at the University of California at Berkeley. Her research interests lie in the fields of corporate finance, behavioral economics, behavioral finance, economics of organisations and contract theory.

Martin Werding is Professor of Social Policy and Public Finance at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB). His research focuses on public finance, social policy, population economics (fertility and migration) and labour market policy.

Following their nomination by the German government and appointment by the German President, Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, they succeed Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Lars P. Feld and Prof. Volker Wieland, Ph.D., as council members. Lars P. Feld's term of office already ended on 28 February 2021, and Volker Wieland resigned as a member of the GCEE on 30 April 2022. Ulrike M. Malmendier is now proposed for appointment until 28 February 2026, and Martin Werding until 29 February 2028.
