Europe

Overview

The economic and political integration of the European Union (EU) is – even decades after its creation – not yet complete. Among other reasons, this is due to regional differences in economic development and diverging opinions about the future design of the European Economic and Monetary Union.

The economic development in Germany and political decisions at EU level interact with each other. The German Council of Economic Experts observes and comments on macroeconomic developments in the EU, especially, on the common monetary and fiscal policy. In this context, the GCEE analyses the current fiscal rules and the proposals for reforms such as a common fiscal capacity and the completion of the banking union.
