Statement by Ulrike Malmendier

It is with deep regret that I have learned that my term on the German Council of Economic Experts (GCEE) will not be extended. Unfortunately, my work for the Council will thus come to an end after only three and a half years.

It has been a great honour to contribute to the work of this body and towards improving economic policy in Germany, both with my scientific expertise and with my perspective from abroad, residing outside Germany in the United States.

I am particularly proud of having developed the early retirement pension, which was endorsed by all my fellow council members, into the German government and into the debate on capital-market based pension provisions and improved intergenerational fairness.

My thanks go to the council members, to the GCEE’s scientific and administrative staff, to my many contacts within the government, to the political parties – across party lines – and, last but not least, to the journalists from various media outlets.

In view of the current challenges in Germany and Europe, I will continue to be available for policy advice in Germany and Europe.

Rest assured: I’ll be back!
