Meetings with international organisations

The German Council of Economic Experts (GCEE) and its scientific staff meet regularly with international organisations and delegations of foreign institutions. The purpose of these meetings is to exchange views on global economic development and current economic policy issues. Furthermore, the GCEE also explains its mandate, its organisational structure and how its reports are being prepared.

European Commission

There are different regular meetings with the European Commission: At working level, for example, specific issues are being discussed, positions are exchanged and the annual report is presented.

European Stability Mechanism (ESM)

Every year, members of the German Council of Economic Experts present the annual report in a lecture to the staff of the ESM in order to exchange views on the contents and positions stated in the work of the GCEE. In summer 2019 Isabel Schnabel presented together with Wolf H. Reuter.

European Central Bank (ECB)

The German Council of Economic Experts meets with the European Central Bank several times a year. The members of the Council of Experts exchange views with the Executive Board of the ECB and present the annual report. In addition, there are meetings at working level where specific issues are discussed.

International Monetary Fund (IMF), Council of Economic Advisors (CEA), US Treasury

Each year, after the annual report has been handed over, a member of the German Council of Economic Experts and its Secretary General travel to the US to meet various association and to discuss the report. In January 2020, Christoph M. Schmidt and Wolf H. Reuter exchanged views with the IMF, the US Treasury, the German Embassy and the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA), among others. In addition, there were several public lectures of the Annual Report in Washington and New York, for example at the Peterson Institute, the German American Chamber of Commerce or the German Marshall Fund.

Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)

Each year, members of the German Council of Economic Experts present the annual report to the OECD. Christoph M. Schmidt did this presentation in February 2020.

Meetings with international delegations

In 2019, the scientific staff of the German Council of Economic Experts met with a delegation of representatives of the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission, officials from the Algerian Ministry of Finance (Direction Générale de la Prospective) as well as the Economic and Social Council from Lebanon. The German Council of Economic Experts presented its organisational structure and key procedures to prepare the annual reports. In addition, aspects of the work were discussed, such as the collection of key economic figures and the preparation of economic forecasts in Germany.

Meetings with other Economic Councils

The German Council of Economic Experts regularly exchanges views with other Economic Councils whose mandate is similar to that of the GCEE. For example, there is a regular exchange with the CAE (Conseil d'analyse économique), which has also resulted in joint publications, for example on carbon pricing. There is a regular exchange with the South Korean National Economic Advisory Council (NEAC), for example at a conference on innovation policy and labour market reforms in Wiesbaden in November 2018.
